Starter damper - again

They fit into a grooved recess, and once the outer section is in place they cannot move. The lip either side is too high for them to become dislodged, and they take no force, just hold the central unit in place.
It is relevant to note that when replacing the circlip (the 42mm one) which holds the plate in, it's a good idea to place a metal ring/socket over the central shaft, as when you are hammering the circlip back into place, from the other end the central shaft should not be hammered on.
I'm finding it difficult to replace the big circlip as I have increased the number of collar springs from 3 to 4 !! It's half-way in, I need a big vice to do the rest of it so it seats properly - wouldn't do to have all that metal falling out in the engine.......
I have tried to move the unit on the stator shaft, and NO WAY will it move, with as much pressure as I can put on it, so MAYBE I'm getting there........but then the starter puts out a lot more horses than I do...............

wow Pete i see you have now started doing it
as late as i am i still say that you seem to be everything all right there on the picture the "circlip on the bottom" supposed to be in two pieces.
You added a one collar spring - well if you get it all back together i think it will work forever - cos it is so much thicker

Hi Andy
Plates were the same thickness as the ones you kindly sent me, so I mixed yours in with mine, used some light sandpaper on them and roughened the metal plates a bit for grip (although with oil flowing through there I don't really know if there's much point.
I haven't finished the job yet, had a couple of other issues which I needed to deal with. I did clean underneath the airbox, and various other areas which you can't get to normally.
I'm hoping I can get to it after supper, if it isn't too cold out in my garage.
Kaspar, I'm hoping that the fourth spring may be the way to go - wasn't an easy fit !!!!!
I'll find out if it all worked soon enough.I couldn't move the unit by hand, as said before................here's hoping..........
