Sorry to beat a dead horse....
OK guys, I am preparing myself to do the deed. In about 2 months (God willing) when the weather is not like vacationing in Hades, I'm doing my Cam Chain. My 1991's rattle has began noticably last longer than it used to. I'm gonna use the time to read up real well through past threads on the subject and buy parts piece by piece to I don't drop a huge wad all at once. And wifey won't shoot me
My main question is about parts. Thanks to you guys I know I'll get a chain that has a masterlink in it. Not sure if my current one has one. I remember somebody in here got a DID camchain. To the "someone" where did you get it, and were you happy with it? Also did you do the tensioner? I figured I was going to, but wanted to purchase them as a matching set. I was planning on replacing the valve cover gasket too (I'll just get from honda). Main concern was how happy were you with your chain and where you got it, and were you able to get a matching tensioner. Also did your chain come at proper length or did you have to cut it.
Sorry to beat a dead horse guys, was just short on time (and patience) today to go digging for it.

I did my tensioner about 30k mile back but did not do my chain. I am getting some rattle but when the bike warms up it quiets down.
It is not a bad thing to bring it up as I have often wanted to point out that with a master link it is very important to put the clip on in the correct direction or it will come off.
The closed end of the clip MUST be on the side of the link the chain is traveling.

only one problem with that
You'd have to split the case open to get your chain on .... A Very BIG
Committment and not entirely necessary .........now that's just my personal opinion.........and nothing more than that

TBT - Good subject to bring up. I learned the hard way when I was much younger. I threw a drivechain masterlink on a dirtbike because I put it in backwards. I made it about 5 miles before it came off. Not a fun walk / push back.
Sprock - I was thinking the same way, but the "follow through method for the chain is just too inviting. I may take the easy way out on this one. Just nervous about removing the cams the other way and messing up the timing. S

Rivet links would be same process as clip links Mike and you
are going to have to remove the exhaust cam too to get
at the tensioner........then time it back up after ............
no worries they'll help ya here with it . I have not done it
either but I'm stashing all the info in the back of my noggin.
Oh and if I've understood any of this improperly (Those
that have done it ) Belt right in with corrections ......I'm
a big boy ......and know where you live !

The master referred to here on these cam chains is only a link that has not been joined .. ( no clip mate )
It has to be fitted and preened over or riveted as some call it ...
To put your mind at ease , I have never heard of one coming adrift ...
Most of the time guys tend to over rivet them causing a tight link and that's not good either.. just take it slow when closing the link up ...
BTW-
Cam chains do not take anywhere as much of a beating OR load as drive chains do , so I would not be comparing the two as they are way different mate ...
