Default rusty gas

bike in shop.Mechanic calls andsays $800 US to get my gas tank relined. I guess rust has been messing up my carbs. He says it's the worst carbs he has ever seen because of this. He says he has to send it out to have it done. I told him to go foreward with it but now I'm feeling paranoid that I may be getting ripped off. Has anyone had this sitch? thanx much.

Hi,
Wow thats a lot for a tank! Could you not grab a second-hand tank and get it sprayed? Gotta be cheaper! Would not spend in uk £400 on a bike worth £1500 at most....

$800 sounds steep to me. There are all sorts of treatments available these days. I would try some of the paint supply companies. There is one here in little old Adelaide South Australia that has products for this type of application. I'm sure that you could find something where you are a lot cheaper than $800. Of course a new or secondhand tank is always an option too.

De-rusting and coatinga tank is well within the average owner's capabilities. For a plethora of posts on the subject go to: http://forums.sohc4.net/ and do a search on coating tanks, leaky tanks, rusty tanks, etc. Those of usthat frequent that board own and maintainvintage single overhead cam Hondas. We are quite familiar with how to deal with rust.

SHEEEEESH - 800 bucks - [X(][X(] get it done here for around 60 dollars, much less if you do it yourself.
I was GIVEN a bottle of tank restorer from a mate in the chem industry, so the product isn't expensive, and did the tank myself, sloshing the stuff around in the tank for 30 mins, then draining it and leaving to dry for 24 hours. Tank good as new. (Old GSX1100 E 1982 model)
Hell, I could get some and post it to you for about 30 dollars US !!!!

You can buy a new, oem tank, for less than $800. Ron Ayres lists new tanks for a 95 at $673.
