The stock carbs are Keihin CV's (Constant Vacumn). All Constant Vacumn carbs are very sensitive to changes in the availability of air/pressure. If you open up the inlets to the airbox by say 50%, you will find the engine dies as you open the throttle (under load not just free reving) due to a lean mixture. To remove the air filter will generally be enough to make the bike unrideable, as such removing the whole airbox, well lets say she won't be very happy.
I have been going down this road as I have modded my ZRX over the years, which is also fitted with Keihin CV carbs.Drilling 4 x 10mm holes in the airbox was enough to upset the applecart. I already had bigger Mains & Pilots fitted but I needed to open up the mixture screws 1/4 of a turn to compensate for these 4 small holes or I suffered as soon as I opened the throttle on the road. Stationary free revving, no problem as there is really no demand for fuel.
I actually triedmy current CBR the day I got it without the airfilter........., it was a pig. Put the filter back in, all good.
You can cause a similar situation running the bike with out mufflers. Sounds good, sort of, but lacks torque due to lean running. I have proven this on the Dragstrip. Removing the muffler cost me about 0.4 of a second, plus potential motor damage. But you would not know it by the number of blokes who come to the strip, pull there mufflers off & race.
Anyhow getting off topic.

got the carbs synced n tuned today. i think the prob that i was having was due to someone useing silicone on the bowl gaskets n some got up in the ports of the carbs cause i fired it up today and it ran like poop at first then it just started to run great like i didnt get all that gunk out when i cleaned them and there was still a piece in there some where but it came out n now it runs fine even better after i did the carb sync throttle was snappy the way i like it.
