Default Odometer accuracy with sprocket change

My Hurricane is 1 tooth down on the front sprocket and I have used a GPS to calculate the speedometer. I always figured the odometer would be inaccurate too, but I talked to another older Honda bike owner over the weekend and he said the odometer is still accurate. i have never worked on my speedometer and not sure it works, but I would think he is wrong. Can anyone clarify this for me concerning the odometer?

Can't be right IMO
What he's saying is no matter what size sprockets you fit it'll be accurate..............
ONLY on the 87/88 which run the speedo off the front wheel.

Mine (1994) reads 10% high with stock size sprockets when checked on GPS.
Just like Shadow says, you must have 87/88 and the only way to change speed readings would be to change the front tire diameter.

I understand about the speedometer, but in your case Timbuctwo, is your odometer(mileage) going to be 10% high as well?

My thoughts are the odometer is based on the speedometer, but the person I talked to said thats not the case. He said the speedometer could be incorrect and the odometer would still be corrrect.

I have an 18 front 44 rear and it's ratio is slightly less than stock.

Today I checked against the GPS I put on and I'm off by 2mph
Speedo reads 2mph more than actual............ I was expecting +2
over the speedo...........surprise there

So I'm guessing your one tooth down on the front puts
you off by 3 tor 5 mph .........my 2 cents

thanks for the input guys, but maybe you dont understand my question because its such a stupid one. LOL

i know my speedometer is off by 11% because I checked it with a GPS. Is my total mileage clock(odometer) off by 11% as well? The only reason i ask this is because i met another honda rider that said the odometer reading would still be accurate even if the speedometer was incorrect.

Dont think a speedo healer will work on the Hurricane, but I have one on my FZ. Easy to install and nice to have.

Correction

Hypothetically speaking

if the rear say had a 30 and the front had say a 15...........miles would surely clock up
at a slower rate because the countershaft would be turning slower even though you'd
be covering more ground............so yeah I'd say it would to be off too in fact I'd bet
Petes hat on it

I'm surprised Sprock - are you checking SOG (speed over ground) ie as crow flies, or MOE
(map of the earth) giving all the ups and down as well ?

I'm with you Bickle! If you are on stock gearing, your speedo will be a little off, showing maybe 2% more than actual speed, but the odometer will most likely be accurate, more or less. Change gearing, and the speedo will be more off, but the odometer will ALSO be off, but not as much as the speedo.

I have changed gearing, and I know my speedo is off, by 14-15% if I remember right, checked with GPS. Haven't checked the odo, but will. I'll check back to report my findings!
