Default New member & Brakes Question

Hello everybody, I did join the forum a while back - here is my 'greeting' message, in case it got lost in time :-)

https://cbrforum.com/m_102918/tm.htm

I've got a question or two which I hope you can help with:

My bike is a 1995 CBR1000FS, so it's got the linked brakes. Now I had occasion to change the rear tyre (third puncture in a year) and whilst I was at it I put new pads on the back brake. By the way, I put on an Avon Azaro AV40ST which I got on ebay (new) and had the tyre fitted to the rim by a tyre shop - that saved me a packet over getting a shop to do the whole job.

After fitting the pads I tested the brakes - the foot pedal operates the rear brake, but squeezing the hand lever does not. This is stationary. I've ridden the bike and tried only using the footbrake - only the rear disk gets hot. Using only the handbrake gets both front and rear disks hot. My understanding was that both hand and foot brake levers operated all brakes. Now the brakes all seem to work fine to me but I think I have a problem!

Any thoughts appreciated.

If you squeeze the hand lever only , when standing still, the rear brake should not activate since this is done by a slave caliper, that operates on leverage of the front left caliper.
If you hit the foot pedal when standing still, both front and rear brakes should be activated. Try this first by turning front wheel when pressing the foot pedal, front wheel should not move... And yes, you probably need help doing this... Post your results.

thanks for the response. I'll try that later today and get back with the outcome.

Cheers

I meant to get back last night but got unavoidably detained in the pub........

Anyway, I just tried pressing the foot pedal whilst turning the front wheel (with somebody leaning on the back of the bike to get the front wheel in the air) and yes indeed the foot pedal does indeed operate both the front and rear brakes.

When I drove to work this morning (15 miles through the Garden of England) I used only the foot pedal. When I got to work I checked the disks - both the front disks were cool but the back was hot (not boiling though). When I replaced the rear tyre I put new pads on the back - i'm thinking it might just be the new pads bedding in that is causing that.

I am going to put a complete set of pads on the front this weekend.

With the rear pedal pressed, all three pistons in the rear are activated but only the two center ones up front are. Heavier breaking is done in the rear (LBS) and slight breaking up front. The disk are also larger up front and there are two of them so less pressure is needed for light front breaking. If you replaced the rear with softer pads you would also get more than normal heat back there. In other words I think things are working OK.
