New guy tire help
#11
Just replaced the steerring head bearings on my 98CBR600F3. If yo do this, be sure to get tapered roller bearings NOT the factory OEM ball bearings. If you use taper-bearings it will be a one-time repair for the life of the bike.
The actual removal/replacement of the bearings is fairly easy to do. The dis-assembly to remove the stem to accomplish that is a major task. You basically take apart the entire front-end of the bike. I had to pull the tank, airbox, and ducts as well to be able to slide the stem out of the frame.
The skills need are fairly basic, it just involves a LOT of taking apart and putting back together. There are a couple of good walk-thrus in the how-to section and on-line.
The only 'specialty tool' you need is a piece of 1/2" all-thread (about 10' to 12") and 2 nuts and 2 heavy washers for it. You use this to simultaeneously pull both new races straight in to the stem mount on the frame.
Set aside about 4-5 hours to do the whole job with-out rushing from start to finish.
