mystery is no more! Sprock took ur advice and went a step farther and bought a new set. Installed and took the bike out for a ride to see which cylinder was not functioning correctly. Out on the road ran it up to speed, then opened throttle all the way, ran fine, issue is with carbs again. Took them off and cleaned pilot jets and mixture screws and reinstalled, like a new bike.
Had I taken it out on the road so that I could have opened the throttle more could have save us all a lot of time. Thankd for all ur input and ride safe

Good stuff there Tom - been working on two sets of carbs myself and sure enough
on both when I pulled the pilot needles out to check - they were totally skanky with
**** and needed cleaning too.

Something to remember I guess - that the pilot needles need cleaning periodically
not just adjusting !
