I'm thinking I may change the front sprocket anyway , waddaya think?
You should not change just the front sprocket. Both sprockets and the chain wear as a set. As the chain wears out it gets longer and the pitch changes. It wears the sprockets accordingly. If you change just the front sprocket you will get accelerated wear from the stretched chain and have a worn out sprocket in no time. This would be a waste of money.

Thanks for the heads-up on the front sprocket Timbuc , which spacers were you referring to , the rear wheel spacers ?

Worn cush rubbers can cause a similar feel when letting out the clutch.

Point taken Steve , the problem is it's only happened three times in a year! So I could be waiting a while to see if its cured the problem or not

I'm starting to think all my problems may be related , the odd wear on the side of the sprocket , the shake on the bars when riding with no hands , the apparent chain slip . TimBucTwo suggested the rear wheel being out of alignment .

I think I'm gonna have to go over everything , from chain tension to wheel alignment and see what I come up with

I'd agree with TBT - the bar shake can be balance (mine was) but if your alignment is out that could cause it too............................

I have to add that the front sprocket is lacking lubrication. Did you clean it before you took the pictures? What are you using for chain lube? There looks like some kind of fluid in the small tapped hole.

Also, you can check for chain wear by grabbing the chain with two rags and checking how much side flex you have on a slack chain. There should only be ½” (12mm) or so.

Could be the old "WD40 on your O-Ring chain or not debate" !..

Not my idea of a good idea, WD40 that is......no way no how.
Stick to real chain lubes and kerosene if you have to give it
bath.
