Yer ...I would not be surprised at that claim of stuff in the Shell oil ... although one would think that a huge company , ANY huge oil company would be at least!! able to filter metal out of the dam stuff ...
...But ...hey may be not ??
may be some had a hate on the Company day that batch went through ?? seriously ...a mega trillion dollar oil producer that cant filter solids from oil ??
" NORMALLY " no taking into account a ****ty service crew (filter maintenance crew ) on any given shift I spose ??
Question :-
does anyone really believe that a Company like Shell would let that happen deliberately, or because they were too slack and did not care about how they filter their products ?? and all this knowingly ??
I don't mind Castrol ...used it for years myself in a heap of engines with no apparent issues .. and I don't buy the super expensive stuff either ...the old std GTX does the job fine as far as I can tell ...
I spose if you want or expect 14,000,000 miles from one engine , then yer may be using super U beaut Teflon , ultra synthetic , modified to take you to the moon stuff is the go ....but me , om not buyin it "literally" LOL
Om happy enough to do an engine rebuild at 120,000- 150,000 klms if that be the case ....

It almost sounds to me like some used oil got mixed up with the new stuff.
I don't see how the heck metal shavings would get into new oil. Something really strange there.
When I worked at a lab, I got called out to a major equip manufacturer one time because they wanted me to test some oil they had taken out of a batch of brand new equipment. When I got there, they had barrels of oil that were half full of antifreeze. The head guy said "I want you to test these barrels of oil for antifreeze contamination." I just kinda laughed and said "I don't think I really need to take samples, do I? I can tell you right now that it's about half oil and half antifreeze..."
Apparently, someone was filling these brand new machines with antifreeze instead of oil.
Probably a third shift new guy...
People make mistakes and strange things happen once in a while.

Ok ... clarification of my rant in the post above .... LOL
....after further explanation of the original topic from Bordo .... I have been informed that the metal was in oil taken from a vehicle after it had been used .... NOT NEW stuff from the factory ...
but still .... oils should prevent chunks of metal ripping away .... and it apparently did not ... so om not touching the stuff , not that I have ever used Shell anyways ....LOL

Sounds like the wrong or bad filter was used, if the valve in the filter was
the wrong pressure rating = no oil.....at times & = metal in the oil.
It's that simple........I've seen people screw on over-sized filters on all
kinds of motors with mismatched bypass valves in them and end up with
exactly symptoms described due to oil starvation my 2 cents.
They think because the filter is bigger the benefits are greater ...not
necessarily so ! Of course then there's just some really cheap lousy filters
out there too.

If the metal came from used oil from a vehicle, then it most likely had nothing to do with the oil.
It sounds to me like a freak occurrence of a couple of bad vehicles that happened to use the same oil.
Sprock, you're right on the bypass valve situation, though. Although it would take a couple of variables coming together at the right time. Thick oil/plugged filter + way too high of a PSI on the bypass/low PSI pump.
Plus, shell makes a hell of a lot of oils. Rotella/Rimula/Shell/Pennzoil/Etc.
Jiffy lube is gonna be pissed...
