I have taken your advice and kept the air box. The other problem is a sticking throttle when the bike is hot, the cables seem ok and the only way to bring the revs down is to almost stall the bike.

I would pull the the carbs, inspect and clean. Won't take too long. Lube the cables too.

On the carbs, check the spring loaded rail for function too. On mine, I replaced a cracked carb body and had binding after I put back together. It was those pesky springs.

Today I pulled the K&N air filter that I just put on the bike. The bike needs to be re jetted with it and I am not going to do that for an air filter.

Edit: It has rained here every day. It is pouring out again today. The weather report said that during June and July there were 8 days of no rain. It rained here on those days. Last Saturday I rode 10 hours in a down pour. When I say rain I am talking high winds and hail. This really sucks.

I have a TB slip-on. I guess I can either install the TB or the K&N but not both.
It is to lean with both.
