Intermittent High Idle
Monopoly money lol!
Thanks man, I'm going to definitely start at ground zero and reevaluate. The cable end and nut to the starter are really rusty probably due to the PO not cleaning the carbs - It used to take a long time to start before I cleaned them and I imagine the heat level for the starter was extreme. The rebuild kit is on the way. Had the same problem with my goldwing and rebuilding the starter cured it. I'll be buying a new battery too, which I'm not thrilled about but agree it needs to be ruled out.
The carbs will come off and I'll get at the air mixture screws, and try that trick Hamlin suggested to check for vacuum leaks. Maybe it will start after that and I'll get to riding again. If not I'll start another thread and commence to whining again lol!

I reluctantly shelled out a hundred bucks for a battery, and i'll be damned the spark came back - You were right tentacleslap! I'm going to rebuild the starter because it still seems sluggish and will have the carbs off as well on a rainy day.
It does take a puff of ether or a long cranking, but when started, normal choke operation and runs awesome. Fast, powerful, no hesitation. The intermittent idle still exists. At least I can rule out spark and electrical (I think), and will focus on fuel & get the air mixture clean and adjusted.
On yesterday's ride one half of the fairing blew off - All the screw mounts broke away. Scared the living **** out of me. Luckily I was close to home. Have no Idea what I'm going to do about it, it's all scuffed up now and no way to keep it attached. She's going to be naked for a while...
Oh, and the glue I used to fix the airbox boots is Seal All - This stuff works miracles:

So...this problem disappeared?
It starts and runs normally, warms up with choke and idles fine after the choke is off. However, with a quick snap of the throttle sometimes it hangs at 4K RPM or so and stays there. But not all the time. If I have the brake on and release the clutch a little to load the drivetrain it immediately goes back to normal idle. It will eventually go back to idle on its own but takes a bit.
Well I'm glad the battery fixed the worst of the problems. It's not really worth it to mail Canadian dollars cause the envelope is probably more valuable, so I'll let y'all off the hook
Rough about the fairing though. Were you driving into a tornado or something?

That problem still remains, but seems to be more infrequent. The carbs are coming off again while I'm doing my starter so I'm going to reinspect for potential tears in the isolators, and also clean the carbs again. Those carburetors are really clean, though.
Lol, we can work something out. I was passing a car and it was a straightaway so kept accelerating of course. The mounting tabs show evidence that they were cracking and I suppose just decided to eventually let go. It's all "Plastic to plastic" and only mounts to the frame in one spot.
If it's any consolation, anything plastic can be fixed. To fix broken tabs I use 2-part flexible structural urethane with that nylon drywall tape for backing. 40 grit scratches both sides of the repair, and cove it out so you get a good cross-section of material. Gob and go (or off to paint, if that's your thing)
This stuff holds like hell. Great product, but pricey. 3M makes them too

If the price is any indication, ought to be damn good stuff.
Yeah, I forget what I pay locally, but it's not exactly cheap. Still way less than 3M. I've probably got a tube or two of this stuff on my hurricane
An old bodyman recommended the stuff to me years ago (our shop only used 3M, so I'd never used the product) but I like it better, especially for structural repair on plastic. Doesn't sand as nice, but great hold and flex. No shrinkage either
Also needs one of those dispensing gun things, so that's another expense
