Default I for the life of me, cannot get my 1988 cbr1000 seat off

I'm serious! I am so embarrased, but I cannot do it. Would someone please lable the steps that I have to take to get that darn thing off. There is maintenance to be done! :P

I thought I just turn my helmet lock to where its unlocked and then pull up, but maybe im missing something. Any help would be appreciated.

On my 88 the key tumbler has an ear on the back worn off, so it does not turn the linkage rod to release the seat latch. My under plastic has a hole that I can take a flat screw driver and stick upinto itand pry the linkage toward the rear of the bike to release the seat.

I ended up taking the latch off and just leaving my cargo net stretched to my hand grab rail to hold the seat in place, I normally carry a backpack under it anyway so that it has quite a bit of pressure holding it down.

You need to turn the key more than just unlock the helmet lock.

Maybe try pressing down on the rear of the seat as you turn the key. This might help free the latch to retract if the hook on the seat underside is somehow preventing this. Also, on my 95 the lock has what feels like a two stage spring on it, the second stage I assume resulting from the added tension from the return spring on the seat latch. You can definately feel this as you turn the key- first stage is turning the key to horizontal, which unlocks the helmet lock, and second stage is past horizontal, which unlatches the seat. If you can't feel this, either you lach or the linkage to the latch is probably broken.

After installing LED's in the tail section, I reassembled the bike and put the seat release linkage in 180 out. The next time I tried to release the seat nothing happened. I had to pry the seat up at the rear and using10mm wrench, turn the nuts that hold the seat on and remove the seat.

Sometimes it helps to put the bike on the center stand and sit on the back like a passenger and raise your weight up and then come down sharply and at the point of impact turn the key CCW. If the linkage is installed correctly this method should take any pressure off the locking mechanism.

My digital camera is dead so I did the next best thing,
Look at part 12 it is the linkage arm that works the latch,
it must be pushed to the rear.
Part 15 normally does this, but on mine the key tumbler will not turn
the part 15 linkage arm, so I had to manually use the screw driver to
push the # 12 linkage to the rear to unlatch the seat.

Hope this helps

If you want to do up a make-shift seat release, once you get the seat off, run some safety wire from the seat towards the rear of the bike and have it come out under the brake light. If you loop it a couple of time, slide a piece of rubber tubing over it, then tie it off you'll have a near indestructable seat release.

Part 13 on simtechs drawing is broken, I had the same problem. It has to be replaced and is not expensive but u will have 2 keys. The saddle can be opened using a screwdriver under the saddle pushing the lever.
