That means that they changed the stock gearing between the generations.

150 miles per tank is around 30 MPG. I live a mile high and I get 39-40 MPG. I don't think gearing will help. I would do an old school tune up. First, I would check the ignition timing. Then change the spark plugs. After that I would make sure each carb piston can move smoothly up and down. Then I would change the air filter, or if it's a K&N, I would clean and oil it. Then I'd check the mileage again.

Just the master link, mate. A whole chain still isn't too bad though, round the $80~$120 mark if I recall. Also check out the Tutoro Chain Oiler system if you don't have a chain oiler already, it'll keep yours in good nick and really improve chain and sprocket life.

On economy, these bikes aren't the most frugal around. If you're after economy get a Honda XR600R and plate it - mine gets an average of 50mpg, returning 250 miles or more from its 6 gallon tank! Thats a mix of hard riding, open road, in town and freeway so a pretty good all-condition figure. I imagine it'd be closer to 60mpg if I was just cruising at 70mph.

But yes, a good tune up will do wonders for a bike. It could be as simple as the carburettors running a bit rich or being out of sync.

Cheers - boingk

if it has the k&n filter it probably has the jet kit as well. if you aren't looking for a performance edge putting the stock jets may help the mileage. i can tell you i got about 45 mpg when i first got mine. cleaned the carbs and found some varnishing in the jets. after the cleaning i get about 33 to 38 mpg depending on how fast i leave the lights.

lol cbrclassic i enjoying hearing from people like you. I was curious to see if there was anything i could do to squeak some mileage out of the old beauty but seeing how i do alot of city driving i wont worry about it. NOw what tires should i use( JUST KIDDING ) I appreciate all the answers everyone. I am actually ordering some chains and sprockets right now to reaplce then and also some new brakes that will get installed over the winter when the bike is down(that is if i let her be down) I like to ride as much as possible and the last couple years when i had my cruiser i rode year round even in good ole snow storms
