I recently got mine. Ok about 6k miles and 1 year ago. When I first got her I was getting about 45 mpg but now average about 35. Pretty sure it has to do with my throttle. Keeps twisting to lock every time I leave a stop . If I fill to the top I can run about 175 to 200 mi before I hit the reserve. I know I need a carb rebuild but cannot bring myself to spend 30$ per carb for new gaskets. the part open choke can hurt mileage a lot but if you have to run with it open there are probably other issues that are impacting mileage and performance that should be addressed too.

I get about 150-180miles or so before I have to switch to res.

I would try some carb cleaner like classic suggested.
Also, the only way to know your MPG is to calculate it a few times.

when im going on a good run i tend to overfill the tank (up to the neck and then some)
i did 204 miles a couple of days ago without switching to reserve and i was'nt trying to be frugal. i just stuck to main roads at about 85 mph.
she'd run on the smell of an oily rag.
and i have sit up handle bars.
very impressive machine

its not stuck, its just that because of the clogged jet i have to run it at about 2/3 choke so that it will idle. when i get it warmed up and i use the throttle to rev it a little, i can take the choke all the way off. i tried to just turn the choke on when i needed to idle (stop lights and such) but it was near impossible to tune it once it had been turned off. it would either kill the engine, or idle really high.

ya, ill pick up a bottle of the carb cleaner tomorrow see if i can get that to work.

alright thanks guys, i got some carb cleaner in my tank now, and we'll find out if that cleans out the jet like i need. as for the mileage i went to air my tires and noticed that they were pretty low, so that should help some now that they are back up where they belong.

Ive only done one long journey on my FJ so far and got just over 140 miles on a full tank not including the reserve

Ive noticed though with my commuting to and from work everyday though town I got a lot less mileage

I get about 42mpg on my 140-mile run each way to work (not every day!) which is about one third motorway and two thirds twisties. This includes some low-gear work and several blasts into three figures. However, compared to my satnav, my speedo is about 8 or 9 percent optimistic, therefore so is my mileage reading, so I suppose I'm only getting about 38mpg. Still, not bad for a 1990 F-L; I've just had her carbs tuned but haven't yet had a chance to take her for a run to see if it's helped.
