In short the airbox when unbolted will pry rearward far enough to get the carbs out.
If you take the fuel bowls off plan on replacement oring gaskets
Air needles and pilot jets are a must along with a good tank cleaning.
Any rust particulates usually mean sealing the tank to stop rust infiltration
to the carb pilot jets.

I have a 1990, I needed to do a deep clean, so I broke the bank and removed all rubber and plastic from the bodies. I then boiled them for 10 min each in some Pine-Sol.
Also, I boiled my jets and needles, do not forget any fuel or breather tubes, or the pilot screws, these both have o-rings and will be ruined if boiled in the Pine-Sol.
I used water to clean the residue off and then some compressed air to dry everything, then a quick blast of some carb cleaner.
Take plenty of pictures if you decide to go this route as getting the bank back together can be tricky.
Any time you reassemble a bank of carbs you will need to re-sync them.
