Gas mileage???

With gas prices going out of control and Rita coming through we could be at $5 a gallon by next week if she goes through Texas...and hits the refineries[:-] So I've been communting ran or shine on my bike and have been tracking what I get for mileage. I can average almost 44 mpg if I am easy on the throttle and can get 170 miles on one take of gas (I thought I could have done better). Not having stock pipes and a K&N fliter might affect that. Well a few days ago I wanted to push how much I could get out of a tank of gas before I'd have to kick in the reserve. Well I freaking ran out of gas [&:] at 178 miles. My reserve only helped me for about 1/2 mile, I got lucky and rolled to about 20 yards from a gas station. I thought we have a 5 gallon tank?? Well I put in 5.5 gallons.....
After leaving the gas station I had a girl tailgating me while talking on her cell, she was so close I couldn't see her headlights in my mirrors. At the next light I got off my bike walked up to her and told her to stay off my A&$# [:@]. That gets me nervous more than anything...

I've been tracking the mileage of my '90 CB1000F since puchasing it a couple of months ago (it also has aftermarket exhaust - V&H). I've put about 1500 miles on it and usually average 45 MPG. Earlier this week, I too wanted to see how many miles I could go before having to switch to reserve. The gas guages on these things is a joke! With the needle slightly below the red (reserve) line, I decided that I'd better fill up so as not to get stranded (the next gas station was about 20 miles away). I pulled up to the pump with 180 some odd miles on the tripometer, still not having switched to reserve. It took just under 4 gallons to top off the tank. I was amazed, having done some "spirited" riding earlier that day.
I used to stop for gas before the needle got too close to reserve, only to find the tank half full. No more, from now on I'm not even stopping until I have at least 150 miles on the tripo.
