Default Fuel valve question

I just bought a 93 1000 and haven't been able to start it. TodayI pulled the tank and took the valve apart then reassembled and now I get a trickle of fuel through the valve. The the diaphram looked okay but who knows?

My question to one of you guys that is smarter than me is, why can't I remove the spring behind the diaphram and do away with this feature altogether? I tested the valve while it was apart and even without the diaphram, there is no fuel flow when the valve is closed. So why is that thin chunk of rubber in there in the first place? My old XL 500S runs great with an ordinary petcock fuel valve.

Can one of you wizards enlighten me here?

Thanks

Default RE: Fuel valve question

Its a safety thing when the bike shuts off because there is no vacume to the petcock it shuts off the valve.

Default RE: Fuel valve question

I pulled the spring out of the back and now I have fuel!

I bought this bike a few weeks ago and hadn't been able to ride it yet. It was too cold to ride yesterday, but I rode anyway. This is y first street bike and I must say I'm hooked. One crack of the throttle was all it took.

I'm sure glad I didn't have one of these 20 years ago.

I'd suggest you rebuild the petcock with a kit - find them on e-Bay......the petcock works off vacuum from a pipe located between carbs 1 & 2. It is a safety thing - the old Suzuki GSX1100 had one too.
