Frame and Registering Question.....
Hi Guys and Girls,
My mate (Bri) has just bought what looks like a 1996 Hurricane in the UK but it's registered as a 1988 on the V5 reg document. Bri's a car mechanic and he says the frame numbers match the v5 and look legit so i'm thinking it's not a "ringer" but if we exhaust all other possibilities then the one left, no matter what it is must be the answer
Let see if we can come up with some answers, lol.

Questions.
1) Are the frames the same on a 1988 and a 1996 so that the parts off a 96 bike could be put on a 88 bike making it look like a 96? (I'm thinking not but i don't know)
2) Probably a question for uk guys this. Is there any way that a 96 bike can be re-registered as an 88 bike? I don't just mean putting a private plate on as the log book actually states the bike is an 88 model CBR1000F-H but it looks like a 96, even down to the colour.
Any help or theories would be appreciated.

Where did your mate but it cos to my knowledge they panels are'nt interchangeable. I would check to see if mountings have been moved. Not only that it looks like the front forks have late model units as well. Check the carbs cos there diferent as well.
Dont like to say it but I think he's bought a ringer bud. That seems a lots to change for no reason, hope I'm wrong but good luck

Hmmm, Ringer was the first thing i thought but it seems to have perfect frame numbers and they match the reg document so i'm trying to find a legit way that it could have been re-registerd. It was bought legit and the guy even let us go to his house to see it so he didn't look shady in any way.
It's a mystery, lol.

I cant think of a way that a 96 model could be registered as an 88. The only way would be to alter the 88 frame to except the later fairing and seat and front forks. One thing to check is the engine. There are differences between the 88 end the 96, and theres always the engine number. IF they match the log book, you will have to go to dvla and see if it has been registered as changed. I am sorry but I still lean towards a wrong un mate.
I have had dealings with registering a modified vehicle and they check them inside out before they clear them for the road. The fact that there is more 96 than 88 means they would have reg'd it as a 96 not a 88. It just dont ring true although it looks good and thats a shame. Have you tried HPI checking it. that may bring to light some thing about what gone on with it .

Hey:
If All the info and Logbooks checks out, it may have just been upgraded to the newer style bike. If you look at my bike you see a 1996 CBR, but it is a 1988 CBR that has been easily modded to accept the newer bodywork, forks, swingarm, linked brakes, seat and wheels.
Why becuse the 88 bodywork was impossible to find used in 1999 in good condition, but the newer stuff was very easy to find, at good prices then. A few people did this to bring the old hurricane to a modern look. I found 2 complete wrecked CBRs 1994/1996 cheaper than I could buy the old 1988 CBR body work only, from Honda. It was a popular upgrade in Germany during the mid 90s when I moved from the UK into Germany.

If it was an import it would have an age related plate but there would be records of it's import at dvla. Its easy to check, I still think HPI check is the way to go first though. If there is anything they will give you the story on it
