Pete, what's your plan for mounting it through the head?
I tried that once... and it didn't work out too well.....
However, I was trying to mount a camera, so it's a little more involved because it has to sit so much higher...
Maybe I'll have another go with it for the GPS?
I think I may stick with my idea of just getting an adjustable cam mount for the tank and mounting the GPS on it when I'm not using the camera?
Not quite sure yet, but if you figure out something cool, let me know.

 

I tried that once... and it didn't work out too well..... What didn't you like about it? I have mine mounted there, the only thing that it in the way of is the keys. I like it there cause its right there with the TACH and SPEEDO. It helps alot when you get out and get lost all you have to do is touch home.

 

Simple to do drill a hole in the center nut cap put long screw with washer through
up into shank of bracketron ball.......it's that simple, before I got the tank mount
it's where I mounted mine at first..........only went with the tank mount because
of the necessity for a camera mount as well.

 

No no... it's not the fact that it's not a good place for it, because I think it is.... I'm just saying that I kinda got stuck with a piece of all-thread poking out the head and nothing functional. (even after trying a couple homemade brackets)

I just need to figure out a way to homebrew an actual mount for the GPS itself. I could probably do it with enough time and energy...

Plus, I have a Magellan and not a nuvi....

Guys, buying the Garmin maps from them when you have an existing machine, just isn't worth it - you can pick up a Nuvi basic model for around $170 with the SA maps, locally. A set of maps costs you $100 on it's own from Garmin if you buy the machine in another country and want local maps..........upgrades of local maps are free here. This'll be my third Garmin - I still have the Streetpilot 3, which I bought overseas and was able to get SA maps for but the memory isn't big enough and the special memory sticks are hard to find.
Ah maybe I'll just buy pirated software...................
Oh and Sprocket, the cap in the top of the headstock just pulls out so you don't have to drill through it.....

 

I recently installed my Garmin NUVI 250W on my 08' 1000RR using a RAM steering stem mount and short ball-mount. I had to custom fit the tapered rubber insert that comes with the stem base but it seems fairly secure and key insertion/removal is OK.

The RAM components used were:

1. RAM B-342 Fork Stem Base $15.50

2. RAM B201UA Short Arm 1.75 in. $11.00

+ Shipping which was $6.00 USPS 2-3 day Priority Mail

I got them online from www.whitehorsegear.com

I already had the RAM NUVI Holder/Ball mount as I swap this GPS with my other bike at times.

They were extremely pleasant to deal with and shipped fast.

Just thought that I might share what I used to mount my GPS.

The RAM Fork Stem Base (B-342) is supposed to fit fork stem holes from 1/2" to 1 1/4" in diameter.
