Fitting Delkevics to Gen 1 CBR1000f-j advice please
Hi Guys
A friend of mine has sold me a pair of Delkevics with link pipes for a great price, however, when I come to fit them I have found some horrendous bodges. My right-hand silencer was completely shot to the point when I unbolted it it came away in two pieces near the collector, I had done a repair last year but I had got to the point when something needed to be done replacement-wise.
Someone has tried to bodge the exhaust, they had welded a piece of pipe to the collector, so I had to break the welds away, the left-hand silencer had been given the same treatment but no welds round the collector exit.
Now, when I offer up the link pipes they rattle around in the collector and I'm wondering am I missing a gasket from each side, I think they may be these that I have seen on Ebay - EXHAUST GASKETS There was no sign of any gaskets when I removed the original silencers but there were offcuts of thin metal wrapped around the silencer on one side and loads of exhaust gum on the other.
My downpipes and collector look a little different to the schematics I have seen on the internet, mine does not have separate clamps, the clamps seem to be built into the exits from the collector, I have attached a schematic that I found for the Gen 1 f-j
My request for advice is, is this all I am missing, just these gaskets? Please see attached photos, (including the bodges).
Cheers, Steve

Your:
#5 and #6 are "Band, Muffler"
#7's are "Gasket, Muffler"
.

Those are part #7 in the schematic. You will need them.
You still have a lot of old gasket material in the collectors (third photo 4-o-clock at split). That all needs to come out. I think that is what you are referring to as "loads of exhaust gum".
Helpful hint: Take the blade out of a hack saw handle and by hand cut the old gasket at the split. Keeping the blade parallel to the collector, cut a slot in the old gasket until you reach the collector, you will know the difference between gasket material and the metal collector when you hit it. Then take a screwdriver and tap whatever material you can. (i.e. Forth photo, 5 o-clock.) You should get large chunks out that way.
You may want to split the collector more open with a small chisel so that the new gaskets will slide in easy.

Some nasty stuff there Steve.
My collector box had those built in clamps as well, useless things. I ground them off and used a good exhaust clamp on both sides. Gaskets and a bit of exhaust assembly paste, was good to go, no leaks and purrs like a kitten.
+1 on TBT's comment about getting all the old gasket material out, the cleaner it is the better the seal you'll get.

Btw Steve if you ring Delkevic UK and ask for replacement collector
box seals they'll usually sort you quickly. I have and extra set of
delkevic link pipes clamps and seals ready to go out in my garage,
my "Rainy Day" Backups . Actually might use them soon
on my 87 with new cans as the stockers are getting pretty gimpy !
