Fair asking price for an 88 Hurricane engine with under 20k miles?
My husband owned one of these bikes for a short time, about 6 years ago, and he nearly lost his life when he wrecked it. It was just too much bike for a green rider. So he pulled the engine off, scrapped the bike (because there was literally little of value left), and has had the engine sitting in a corner of the garage for the entire time. I'm not sure what he intended to do with it, but he no longer wants it, and has asked me to sell it for him, so he can do an overhaul on the engine in his car. My question is, what is a fair asking price for one of these?
It depends where you are, but a complete running 88 in the US would go for around $1200. Less in the UK, I've seen them sold for 600 pounds. Just an engine, probably around $400 is all you'll get for it at best.
I'm in the U.S, I've seen them on eBay for an asking price of $950 with the make an offer option, They never sell for $950 when I check completed listings, as far as I can tell. I thought I would place it on eBay for $750 with a make an offer asking price, and see what happened.
Hey:
Just be prepared to go way lower for the 87-88 motors, I sold my old 88 for $300.00 on Ebay and purchased a newer 96 motor for $450.00 complete with less than 3,000 miles on it and that was a few year back. They are worth more if you have the rad, carbs, hoses, and electrics, as then sprint car and sand draggers could show interest too.

Do you still have the engine and what condition was it in when he took it off (running or not, how many miles).
My 87 shattered the alternator chain tensioner and I'm in the process of rebuilding it. Would consider having a spare if price is right and it ran.
