F1 to F2 or F3 conversion...
I have an 87 (F1). I was wondering since I need to eventually replace all of my bikes body work can I just buy newer body work and apply it to my bike? I think the front cage (that holds the windshield/screen and headlight) has to be changed but after that do the other pieces bolt on to the same mounting points as my current body work on my frame or are those different? I've already searched here and Google but to no avail!
Well the easiest way is to stick with fairings for that model year if you are looking
to bolt up to existing fairing stays and frames. Anything else with require swapping
stays and doing custom work - could be done but a lot of work.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I may settle on a european (I think) upper fairing. I seen one with twin headlights like the GSXR (86-91) and may try to graft a 93+rear on with some plastic welding and fiberglass work. I've found a junker close to me who has dismantled two 1988 Hurricanes and he has everything except the upper fairings so I got my parts supplier. I may end up buying his extras that I don't need seeing as I haven't rode since 2006.

Just to confirm we are talking about a 87 CBR1000F? Yes it can be done, going to either the 89-91 body work (cheaper), or 92-2000 body work (more pieces, more expensive, but a little better looking IMHO) and is not to bad. That is if you do not mind doing a little cutting off of a few brackets, some welding, fabricating some new brackets, and drilling about 6 holes in the frame. It works out much better if you can find a newer donor bike when doing this the 1st time. I have done it 3Xs and could give you some guidance, should you go down this path. The frames are pretty close and require some minor work to get from 87-88 to 92 plus bodywork in real terms. The newer bodywork pricing is why you do not see this done as much as it could be, as its is often hard to find good newer bodywork at reasonable prices. The headlights are not cheap for either the newer bikes used and out of control new. I can tell you that before you consider doing this, procure the complete newer body work, seat, seat lock assembly, foot guards, grab bar, headlight, tailight, wiring harness, indicators, and fairing frame from the same model, you want to go with as much as you can of the same colour to save you time and expense later on. All seats after 88, 89-00 are the same except colours, as well as side underseat fairing panels. If you can find a cheap newer doner bike then go for it , if not it will be a magic quest. Good luck on what ever you decide.
I used to have some pictures of the first 88 one I did, with 96 bodywork, but that bikes bodywork is now Daytona Yellow and is on a 91. The paint did not turn out as I would have liked but that is the way it goes sometimes. Any ? just ask.
Also the 89 plus cartridge forks/triples and both wider wheels are a great upgrade even if you don't do the bodywork.
You need a 89 plus sprocket cover to convert from front wheel speedo drive to sprocket speedo drive, just bolts right up with new speedo cx.

But only if somebody really wants this, as it takes time away from getting other things done, (Racebikes prep, CBX project, Fighter project, pro street car, off road Jeep racer, Classic Mini Cooper S restoration, and so on, plus my real job that pays the bills and takes 60-80 hrs a week, when home and gone alot, but gives me money for toys) So does anybody want this? If they do I'll get started on this today. Just give a vote here if you want it.

thanks for the great info!!!! I would like to see the tutorial but take your time as I will have to procure all of the necessary hardware anyway to complete. So it may take some time. I just like the look of the newer body work compared to the one I have. I've also thought about the other wheels as a "between" upgrade until I can source all the appropriate hardware or donor bike to use. Plus I want to do something that very few have done.

Me too, thats why I went this route, and the lighting is so much better, Also when I first did this the 1 gen CBR 1KF body work was more costly and harder to find than 3rd gens.
I'll count that as a Yes vote, and get started on it on Sunday.
