Oh yeah, I have the tank insulation still. The CBR is just a hot ride. Mostly in traffic. I know the FJR riders complained about their bikes being hot. Ha! I had one it wasn't as hot as the CBR is! Faired bikes can retain a lot of heat.
The problem with running the fans, it pushes that heat right back and up towards the rider! I have to say the GTS so far has excellent heat managment.

On the '91 models there are rubber flaps that kind of seal the openings. I've never had trouble with heat from mine from front, side or tank. There is a rubber piece that makes a seal between the head and upper frame under the tank. If that is gone perhapsyou could get hot air flowing from your radiator over the engine and under the seat. Don't know if that piece of rubber is included on the '87 models or not.
