Default Engine Heat, its burnin up my knees!

The heat is coming through the upper holes on the side cowls. It is actually nice on a cool day, but on a hot day, it is really hot.

Has anybody modded there cowls?

Are the rubber flaps in place that semi seal those holes? I've never noticed an objectionable problem with mine.

Oh yeah, I have the tank insulation still. The CBR is just a hot ride. Mostly in traffic. I know the FJR riders complained about their bikes being hot. Ha! I had one it wasn't as hot as the CBR is! Faired bikes can retain a lot of heat.
The problem with running the fans, it pushes that heat right back and up towards the rider! I have to say the GTS so far has excellent heat managment.

On the '91 models there are rubber flaps that kind of seal the openings. I've never had trouble with heat from mine from front, side or tank. There is a rubber piece that makes a seal between the head and upper frame under the tank. If that is gone perhapsyou could get hot air flowing from your radiator over the engine and under the seat. Don't know if that piece of rubber is included on the '87 models or not.

Mine is an 88 and I have that piece. But the tank still gets pretty hot.

My 88has more hot air on the left side then the right through the side vents. You can't ride it with shorts on it burns your left leg. I don't think the alternator is good enough to run the fanall the time.
