how can you test to see if there bad? and does the have to come out of the bike to work on it?

Like its been said, its a very common issue with these bikes. and there is A LOT of information concerning these issues on past posts.
Good luck. THe Manual will save your life. I personally bought a Haynes manual.. seems to make things a little more layman.

Suggest you look at the workshop manual as it is easy to see there..... page 10-4 ....
1990 Honda manual (page 10-9) states: "Adjust the backlash while the engine is cold. Loosen the pinch bolt and turn the shaft counterclockwise up to dead end and back off by one graduation. Apply a locking agent to the threads of the pinch bolt and tighten it securely."
Here islink to the manual http://members.iinet.net.au/~cbr/Hon...ice_Manual.pdf or https://cbrforum.com/m_123412/tm.htm

RE: engine clank
Mate ..the timing chains do not come with a master link(a link with a clipped joiner)
that's ehy they looked at you strange possibly..??
DID ..make one of them that is broken ( disconnected at one link) already and all you do is feed it through very very carefully and rejoin it... then pean( squish the pin shut tight ) it back together .. or if you have a good chain breaker they should or might come with a tool to re lock the link... some guys tig weld the join link to be sure it stays locked..

D I D and Takasago both make cam timing chains with master links.
It's been discussed before, about two months ago - check previous posts, mine and others.

The are just broken ..meaning one link is open to rejoin...once joined you cannot tell where the join was ..so the "master" link is no more ...the shops do not call them master links either ..
I see you got a new service tow vehicle Pete...
