Bought a new chain today. It's gold, which I wouldn't have considered but it was all that was available locally. Sprockets look brand new as far as wear so they can stay on. Left handlebar weight is gone so I need to fabricate a new one tomorrow for more vibe dampening. I'll also look at my balance adjustment, thanks for the link Sprock.

If the vibes still bother you after the chain, balancer and bar weights, try some foam grips. I'm going to try gel ones when the foamies wear out...they just don't look like doing it though.

I'm glad you went with the new chain! The colour doesn't matter, you can't see it when you're hanging on for dear life . It's sure to be a big improvement on the old one, by the sound of it.

Got the new chain riveted on and adjusted. I also adjusted the balancer. It ended up a few notches counter-clockwise. Bike still has some vibration but as long as that's normal it doesn't bother me.

Lets face it, you're on a motorbike, not a magic carpet

But seriously, it sounds like you've got her safe now. Colours are a matter of taste, but safety has no colour there's enough out to get you without you adding to it

Sounds like you've sorted most problems Are the vibes through the bars or the foot pegs?

It comes though the bars and tank, peaking in intensity around 4k and getting smoother as the bike revs higher. The drivetrain feels very smooth now with the new chain. Maybe it will run more smoothly when I do the valves? New fork seals came in today so I will do the valves tomorrow when I take off the forks.

Balancing the carbs may help as well, get all those cylinders working together and you'll hit the sweet spot! Though if you're going to do the valves that'll be something you'll want to do after

You mentioned the bar weights. Where are you up to with those? The originals are a fair size chunk of metal so, if you're missing one or they're not the right (or heavier) ones, that's probably what's causing your vibes.

I have 1 bar weight, so 1 bar is fine and the other has more vibes. Not a big issue, especially after my last ride...

So I took the bike out for a quick ride to get the chain nice and hot so I can wipe off all the extra grease left from the install. Near the end of the ride I smell something strange... I had put seafoam in the tank before riding but it wasn't seafoam I smelled. When I pulled the bike into my garage and dismounted I saw smoke coming from the rear of the bike. Immediately I knew it was the r/r and after pulling off my rear fairing I unbolted and unhooked it. I had to douse it in water since it was blowing copious amounts of smoke out of a hole in the side. I see I can get a factory replacement for around $100. Anything better out there?

Have a bit of a read of this thread mate. There's a heap of others too as this seems to be a common problem.

I bought a cheap one off ebay for $35. While I wait for it to arrive we'll see if I can make my own r/r... just took a look at the honda service manual and the wiring looks pretty simple.
