Welcome to the Forum ! I've just finished a camchain replacement on a 1990 model -
If you intend to use a Honda chain, you have no choice but to remove the engine and split the casings, because it has no masterlink. If however you use a chain with a split link, you can do the job in around 4 hours, with a bit of guidance, by splitting the old chain, attaching the new one to it, and threading it through the motor by turning the crank. Go back through previous posts and you will find a wealth of information - check posts from Dad, TimBuktoo, Noe, R1000, and others. There are pictures to help you. A manual might help too - download one free at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/midlife/i...ice_Manual.pdf
Be careful not to drop any bits in the motor.....

Two things - first, the Haynes manual isn't as good as the link I gave you. I use both to get a good idea of what to do.
Second ,the brand of camchain I used was DID, very good quality. The bike needs a chain with 150 pins. Check previous posts for camchain part number. They are available here in SA over the counter.....if you have a problem finding one, I can buy one here and ship it to you for about US$70. Check www.wemoto.com - their price for the same chain is around $130......
Up to you.

I just happened to be the first of many members to see your call for help.
Ask any question, and all the guys will pitch in and help......
No thanks necessary.
Just a thought - when you bought your new camchain tensioner, did you get the modified one which was made when Honda found out the plunger was too short, and lengthened it ?
Pic attached.

I used a Honda chain and cut it to fish it around the crank and cam gears. I used a tool that puts a new pin in the chain and then burr it back together. Although I would go for a chain that uses a master link as the tool is not cheap to buy. I borrowed one from a friend who works on bikes. Total cost was about 250.00 Can

Also Marcscab...have you adjusted your balance shafts? They also cause a similar chain sound at idle if the adjustment is out, so before you go slammin a chain and adjusters in your baby, check into the balancers. There is a great write up on it somewhere on this forum, I'll have alook for you........pictures and everything!

Good thinking, Gill, although at 34000 it's likely to be a chain, and seeing as Marcsabb's bought all the new parts, we may as well help him fit them........with help from all the other guys, who have also done it.......[8D] My bike's just turned 60,000 Kilo's (37000 miles odd) and this's my third chain.

yes i need help from u guys , thanks , i didnt do the balancer shafts yet , dont know how to do it ( how can i balance it ?) ! is it dificult ? i searched for a tool that put a new pin to burr the new chain on , didnt find in lebanon i was ready to buy but didnt find one (when i ask for these kind of tools they look at me if i come from another planet ) , i gues better to buy a chain with a master link , b4 i remove everything , i ll think and work slowly , one think last year i removed the camchain tensioner and found that it was stuck , i cleaned it and put some wd 40 oil and re installit the sound disappeared for a period of 1 month then came back , but i guess the chain has to be replaced bcz tooi guess too much free play ,
as for the new camchain tensioner i ll check it out , the plunger is at the bottom
of it ? is it the cylinder that keep the oil ? i guess it s the new long one . .
here no proffessional mechanic , i prefer to repare it myself , my hurricane gave me a lot of pleasure riding it wont accept that one fool mechanic do worng repairs, all are beguinners , even in honda s garage .
no rain today in here i ll go for a ride . hope u enjoy your sunday too .
thanks a ot Shadow1 and Gill . here no radars and no speed limit i guess we are lucky to ride the way we want we are still at stone age time
thanks again guys , u have msn messsanger ? if yes add me ( marcsabb@hotmail.com )

See Gill's last post on how to do the balance shaft, Marcsabb. Not difficult.....
Plunger is at the bottom, yes.
Cylinder keeps the oil, yes.
There should be NO freeplay in the chain.
No radar and speed limit is good, but all that SAND.....he he
Ride safe and have a good Sunday.
