I started the cam chain replacement today. When I figure out how to post the pictures you'll have them, or I can e-mail them to you incl details and pics of the modified tensioner.

 

It would be nice to see a picture of themodified tensioner.

Thanks Dad, I'm right in the middle of a replacement, some very useful pointers there.

 

When I get around to it sometime in March or April, I'll replace the tensioner and cam chain and do a write-up about it. Something tells me there is a whole lot of suck involved though.

 

The CCT is like a hydraulic lifter. As oil from the CC drops down it fills the cavity below the plunger of the CCT. This action takes up play that is present as the CCT spring holds the slipper in place but offers little resistance to the variations in the chain due to engine vibrations. The hydraulic pare of the CCT acts like a shock absorber. When the bike is at rest and the CC is at its tightest position, oil is forced out of the cavity and past the plunger. You have to have some leakage or the chain will become too tight. Upon startup you will here a rattle until the cavity is full again. As the walls of the cavity and the plunger wear the effects of the CCT lessen and it will have to be replaced. The more the chain rattles the quicker it will ware out as well.

The type and condition of the oil and change frequency play a big part in CCT longevity.
I bought my bike with 12,000 miles on it. I had to replace the CCT at 15,000 miles. I have 45,000 on the bike now and only have a slight rattle until the bike is warmed up.

What’s normal play and what’s not? To loose, things rattle. To tight, the chain wares out and breaks.

I am happy with a little rattle at startup, not much, just a little.
