Default california head

Hi,

I am building my 1988 Hurricane, I bought a head on ebay, (cheaper than new valves for my old head). But i didn't realize i was buying a California head with the extra ports on the exhaust side for the smog pumps. Can i thread these and block them off? Thanks.

Default RE: california head

I haven't had the need to do that but can't imagine any reason not to. The compression is the same and the castings for all of the heads have the pad in place just above each port, just not machined. I think I would try to cap or plug it and then grind the inside just enough to blend nicely with the existing port. They are on the top side of the port, correct? The outside of the bend where they may cause some turbulence in the flow? Could you make the plugs from aluminum? Easier to work with and equal expansion is my thinking. Are they flanged connections? Possibly a plug with a blind flange to capture it? I'm sure there would be a nice way to do it without making a mess of it.
