Boiling battery

Boiling battery
G'day from W.A. Western Australia that is
I have been having problems with the battery in my CBR1000FN boiling dry on long rides in hot weather.
The last time I rode from Perth to Melbourne, a little over 3,000Km I had to top the battery up each day to keep it from boiling dry, admittedly the temperature was in the mid to high 30's (deg. C) and but the charging voltages seem fine, the Reg Rec is fairly new and the first lasted 8 years, so I think the current one is ok, anyone else had this problem ?
Mark.

RE: Boiling battery
Hey Mark another Perth person. What are the chances of that!
Are you on PSB as well?
Hook a car volt meter up to the battery (they cost bugga all at Supercheap) and ride for a few days with it so you can see what is going on.
But my battery was doing the same thing as well. After my fix I haven't had it running eough to kow if that fixed the probem.

RE: Boiling battery
No not on PSB.
The local Cash Converters has been replaced by a Super Cheap Autos so might drop in tomorrow before a ride to get a Volt meter, though could probably hook my multimeter up, though last time I checked it it was around 12 v at idle, and climb to 15 volts at 3000 rpm and stay there no mater how high the rpm climed over 3000. Would definately like to get this settled by the time I ride over to Melbourne again in a 3 weeks time. I will also try the fix after I have some baseline data of before the fix. The mob at the Battery place in Port Augusta didn't think the charging voltage was excessive which made me think it might have just been heat drying out the battery.

RE: Boiling battery
The manual say's that the voltage should be 12.6v to 15v@5,000.
I believe the battery should read about 12.6 when bike is off , (my new battery reads 12.74v)
Have a look at http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/maintenance/battery.htm
Basically, if you get back from a good ride and the battery read 12v, you have a problem
If you disconnect the battery and it reads 12v, then only reconnect the battery if it's a new one.
Doesn’t mean you still don’t have a regulator problem, but I think you have a battery problem.

Hey mark.
Come on over and have a look at PSB when ya get a chance.
www.perthstreetbikes.com
Its mostly just a post-***** board for squids, but there is still a good community feel and there are always group rides as well as pissups, trackdays, groupbuys, discounts etc.
my name over there is Cbr1k
There is a small insane group of us that go on 300-600k high speed group rides every Saturday, but I haven been for a while as my bike is still not 100%
Cheers
Rob
p.s dont use ya real name anywhere as the Coppers read the board too (Thats why we have hidden invite only sections)

RE: Boiling battery
A little out of the squid age group at 47, but I will have a squiz, but doubt I will post any extreme riding stories that would interest the cops
Just checked the battery, the idle voltage is 12.2V and the 5k+ rpm voltage is 14.8V so looks like the charging system is working, unless it glitches when hot, so either the charging voltage creeps up as the RR gets hotter, or it is envornmental heat that is cooking the battery.
