Apologies to ST Coleridge.........
The rhyme of the ancient biker
The time has come, the biker said, to whisper in the wind
Of corners taken much too fast, when in the past I’ve sinned
By cutting off my fellow man to get to breakfast early
Or braking late, I sealed the fate of one who was more worthy.
We ride too fast, the biker said, in groups or going shopping
The ones behind will surely find no place for panic stopping
So hear the plea from such as we who haven’t had the training
Spread out a bit, avoid a hit, and save us from a maiming…
The roads are bad, the biker, sad, to lose another member
When jokes are heard he’ll pass the word, and better you remember
For youth and time they are no crime so hear what he is saying
And heed the word, or so I’ve heard, your friends may end up praying
The hospitals and wards are full, the broken and the buckled,
Of those of us who curse and cuss but on a beer have suckled
So take a hike, don’t ride your bike when flirting with a brandy
The ones who do will vow to you how hard the pavement can be!
For such as we who live so free, the road is ever calling,
But rain and ice are never nice and soon will send you sprawling
The left hand bend could be your end if taken oh so speedy
And potholes too will skittle you and leave you feeling needy
So heed the word – it’s not absurd to listen to his whisper
For he has been, and surely seen some things to make you shiver
A shredded tyre, a bike on fire and from the bushes moaning
This little rhyme- please take your time- and get to where you’re going!

Thanks for that, good advice.
I ride all the time during daylight (Not night or dusk)with high beamb i notice on motorways people get out of the right lane= must be seeing me)
And assume everyone will hit you I have used for years (position yourself as far away from traffic going same way and the other way is what I do too)
And something thats a bit illegal, For upto about 10 cars at red lights (provided it just changed red), I will split traffic to get to the front (not at 80kph, about 15-20) as someone once opened their door to check something in thier boot (if I was going faster I would have smacked thier door), as I figure, if no-ones around no-one can hit me!!!

My wife is studying for her M1 here and the manual really bugs me. It requires that you position your bike to "control" the lane - i.e. to block cars from coming into your lane. So, on the highway they require that if you're in the passing lane you must ride in the track closest to the next lane over. To me, this is nuts. I ride as far from the other cars as possible.
It drives me crazy to see people riding with their handlebar right on the centre line. THe number of times I've seen cars drift over centre makes this seem one of the dumbest habits I've seen riders adopt.

Griffin,
I ride in heavy traffic daily and if I don't crowd the other lane they will simply enter mine. I really hate driving on any road were I have to drive in a center lane as invariably the lane I'm not crowding will decide they have more of a right to the lane I'm in than I. Besides if I'm crowding the lane I will notice the other vehicle encroaching and have more room (the rest of the lane)and therefor time to react and get out of the way.
