Default '93 1000F - Shock Removal?

Hello,

I just joined looking for help with my friend's bike. He wants a new rear shock. Choices are obviously very limited. Penske is one option and the local dealer is enthusiastic and wants to help. He's asked for the original shock so they can figure out the particulars. But, holy hell, How do you get the rear shock out. I have the shop manual and have done everything in the order described. At this point the shock is not coming out. I can move it around but can't find the magic angle. I'm seriously considering removal of the swingarm or alternatively the exhaust header.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum GPZBeaner,

You have removed the rear wheel haven't you? Once the rear wheel is removed and the lower linkages, it should fall out!

Cheers, SB

SB,

Yes, I did all of the above. It does not fall out. It falls down and hits the exhaust header/collector... which is directly below it... Seriously, I have no idea what to do next. I've tried moving the swing arm in different positions. I've removed both mufflers. I can't figure it out. I appreciate your help and welcome anything else that is offered.

Eric.

SB, Thanks for responding.

I completed all the requisites. I removed every bolt in order. I've even removed both mufflers. The shock does indeed drop strait down, but then it encounters the exhaust header/collector and will go no further.

I'm stuck.

Willing to take any advice. Thanks.

UPDATE!

It's out. Pulled it to the left, when looking from behind. It did not want to move but eventually it did and then it "just fell out" Thanks for the help and support. I'll probably be back with more questions.

Well done Eric!

It's usually just an accumulation of decades of crud that makes things difficult.

We're here to help, so any questions welcomed.

Cheers, SB

Wilbers in Germany make good shocks for all the CBR1000F models. They're on eBay for about $US450 plus shipping.
I'd be careful about someone who wants to use the original shock to make a new one! It's already been done by the major makers.

Good luck either way.

I scored a used Ohlins on eBay for $550. I can't locate an Ohlins spring rate chart on line, so as soon as it gets here, I'll take it to the local Ohlins rep to get the proper spring for it.
