91 CBR1000F- electrical system died
O.K. open bar in cooltim's thread ! LOL!
It's sounding more like a battery , with that battery being that old .
Most battery's last 3 yrs at most , depending on what brand .
Change out the battery , check out the charging system with a fresh battery as you'll have no question if your system gives you any lower than normal readings . A multimeter is a must doing the charging system check . Fluke and Actron have automotive electrical testers made for feedback electrical protection , meaning you can test it while its running. Go with actron ,,its way cheaper ,, I use fluke myself ,,I bought it through the matco guy on the truck,,payed to much for it as usual . Buying a multimeter that isn't for 12v systems with fry the tester or the circuit ,,or both . There's other cheap testers out there as well , just check the tester for 12v compatibility .
Testing @ 200m setting should do it .

Well apparently it is not the battery. My bike mechanic charged the battery and tested it and it charged properly and held a charge. So I am gonna ride my bike to shop to have the charging system checked. I just hope it makes it the 30 miles to get to the shop!!
WEll this is one of those things the test light can;t help with...
If you went and bought that multimeter, just put it across the battery and measure volts. You are looking at about 12.5 ish for a good battery, and it should go up to around 14.5 with the bike running (and rev it a bit, it might not make 14.5 until 3 or 4K rpm) if the charging system is doing fine.
Honestly though, flat batteries don't just die like that, it's a slow agonising spluttery death if your charging system fails and you ride till the battery is flat.
If it worked again later then it is going to be a loose wire somewhere.
Try starting the bike, then jiggling things randomly. like if you can get hold of any of the wiring loom somewhere give it a tug and a shake, especially near the ignition (I can't remember if you have much access to that with the fairings on, it's been so long since I have seen a clothed 1000f...)

In the past, a faulty petcock was the blame. Strange that the dash lights would go out. Did you check the battery connections? They may have gotten corroded.
Edit: smell of gas could be O-rings.

Just dealt with my share of problems I think...
That will be awesome if a new battery fixes it. I should have pointed out the first thing to point the test light at is the battery... (If only to test the light)
electrical systems in these things are pretty simple, and once you get to know them then you can do some pretty nifty things...
I.E. my Hurricane has a keyless ignition and remote start that I hacked onto it from a $20 ebay keyless entry system. I hate having ignition keys on a bike cause they are a pita so this seemed the best idea. The chicks love it...
Seriously wickedly simple as well, you can get away with just connecting 2 or 3 wires to the bike around the battery and off it goes!
I'll do a quick write-up and see if anyone's interested.
