A 35w will be plenty in those valleys. If something is that dark it really doesnt take too much to make a difference. The 55w might make you see another 10yards farther but either way you need to be going slow enough for those hairy things to jump out.

Thanks for the input everybody, I think I will probably go with the 35w to be safe and legal.

I wouldn't. You'll be fine on 35w.
