well...your local bolt conneiseur at your service..let me first off start by saying your somewhat lucky you want to do black...you would be luckier if you did blue, purple, or gold, but black is a close 2nd to those 3...

i have all your answers only because i have reasearch tirelessly to figure out how to blacken out all my bolts, (and red anno some as well)...

you best place to go is www.tastynuts.com they are a UK company so expect about a 2 wk delivery time...for any NON-STRESS related applications you can get aluminum which is lighter (big deal) and can be anno'd in tons of colors (red, BLACK, blue, green, now orange, etc.)...non-stress areas includes engine covers, windscreens, fairings, gas cap, etc....

for high stress areas you go with either stainless steel or titanium....bad news now...sprocket nuts, axle bolts, caliper bolts, etc...all high-stress....meaning SS or titanium only....SS only comes in polished...and titanium only comes in purple, blue haze, or gold....or titanium...

here's the GOOD news....for SPROCKET NUTS...they make aluminum ones with steel threaded inserts so you can have the aluminum look with the torque strength of steel...check out my diary thread and i have the red anno'd ones...

the reason you can't use aluminum in high stress areas is mostly because they cannot be torqued to factory specs and thus don't have the strength...and unfortunately titanium CAN'T be colored black or any other color than those listed due to the metal composition without performing an EXPENSIVE process...

here's the last bit of good news....i have found a way to blacken stainless steel and steel bolts which i have pretty much assumed are all the bolts that come standard OEM on the bikes...meaning you can blacken almost any bolt, fastener, nut, ect....without buying new pieces (a bunch of which you would not be able to find)....i really don't want to divulge my secret until after i try it and do it but if you really want to know...PM me....

finally...as for painting...i have done that too...tirelessly....i have gone through different processes, different paints, different top coats...NOTHING lasts due to the wrenching...the longest has been powdercoat...but even that chips on the edges of the head....you can look at my diary thread and see a LOT of bolts are black...most are painted....although from a distance they look okay...up close they look like crap....when i get my blackening stuff...i am going to redo every bolt on my bike that i painted...

sooo...sorry for the long answer, but if you have any other questions, let me know....on bolts, i likely have the answer!

I sell bike bolts. Color is good on them and they do the job. pretty inexpensive too. Lots of different colors to choose from. There is both gloss black and matte black.

i have had powdercoated bolt heads before and they just don't stand up that well...i mean...perhaps after only one or two wrenches...but....i mean i have had my caliper mounting bolts PC'd and have had to take my calipers on and off since for wheel reasons...and the edges of the hex head are already starting to chip a bit...

that's just me...that's why i am going with anno...only because the coating is a little deaper and can with stand the wrenching a little better (IMO)...for the rest, i am just going to blacken them myself with a solution i found that is damn near imprevious to tool marks....
