1988 Hurricane 600 Build
Hey everybody, a few months ago i picked up my first bike, a 1988 Hurricane 600 with a 1987 parts bike. The 1988 has 78,000km on it so a full rebuilt was started by the previous owner who swapped alot of the 1987 parts onto it. The 1987 is in exceptional condition with only 9,000km on it but one of the previous owners started to tear down the engine and didnt mark anything! All the pistons were taken off the rods without marking what cylinder they came from and the cams were not stored properly and started to rust. Apart from that i'd say she was a steal at $600 for the pair
When i picked up the bikes the 88 was already completley stripped and the frame powdercoated with a few parts reinstalled back onto the frame, so all that remains for me is to put it back together and finish up the engine.
Heres a picture of the frame after the previous owner powdercoated it
When we got the 1988 home, Before a MAJOR cleanup (my dads 1978 Kz1000 is in our shop getting rebuilt so i get to rebuild mine in my room)
Me getting into the parts bike engine to see what kind of shape it was in
Parts Bike frame with engine being taken apart
Parts bike engine
The cylinder block from the parts bike beside my dad's Kz1000 block (he likes making fun of my "Baby engine")
After a good cleaning
And how she sits right now, i put the old rims and tires on just to get a feel for how she looks
Tires are next on the list, with a chain, sprockets, and valve seals coming in the near future. I'll try to keep this build up to date but as i'm currently going through my Basic Training the progress might be limited
Thanks for looking!

The project is back on track!
Both heads are off to the engine shop today for a rebuild but I've run into a bit of a problem. They asked me to buy the valve seals but the cheapest i can find them is $10 a piece With 16 valves that gets kind of expensive. Does anyone know of a site where they are cheaper than this, or is this a normal price for our bikes?

Its amazing how excited new parts can get you isn't it? My tires, chain, and rear sprocket are finally in. still no word from the engine shop though
For now i decided to go with some cheaper tires as i'm only going to be cruising around town learning how to drive. Once i get some time under my belt and i start hitting the track i'll get some better ones. I went with a 110/80-17 Kenda up front and a 140/70-17 IRC on the rear. The pair only set me back $190 so theress not much to complain about here
Might as well take some pictures!
I'll probably be giving the engine shop a call tomorrow to see how the two heads are coming. Lets hope their going to be done soon!
