Default Front springs-'87 model

Hi guys, I have looked every where but cannot find any info in relation to the replacing of the front springs on my '87 1000F. I know that the springs are cactus so can anyone tell me or warn me about any issues that I will have or encounter when I start to undo the top nut? Will the spring be under pressure? Will I only need to remove the nut and the washers and the spring can be removed and a new spring installed? I have a spare set of forks so I can use the springs out of them. I recently had the seals replaced in my current forks hence the reason why I am not changing over the complete forks. If I decide to install progressive springs, do I need anything else such as spacers etc.?

Many thanks.

make sure you jack the front of the bike up so the forks fully extend, a couple of blocks under the engine, crack the caps off first before you jack her up but do not remove or you will make a mess and the bike will drop, make a note of how the spacer and washer come out, you should be able to pull the springs out, you may need hook to reach them, just make sure you have plenty of rag as it will be messy. as regards to progressive springs some come with spacers or re use your own, if you want to alter the pre load you can make your own.

Many thanks for that. I was about to start this afternoon but the temp. has just dropped from 19 to 6 in about 15 minutes with a weather change so it looks like it will wait until the weekend.

Cheers Steve.

I changed the springs over on the weekend and from the time I rolled it out of the garage, (I did the job under my car port for more room) until I dropped it back onto the ground it only took about 45 minutes. I replaced the springs with original ones from a set of forks that I had lying around. Took it for a road test and all seems fine. The weather on Saturday was about 21 degrees (Celsius) so the short road test took about 2 hours. Best time of the year to be riding around I say. I will still look at changing these springs with a set of progressive ones as I want that little bit more confidence in the front. Thanks for the advice guys.
