In this pic you can see the outer rim of the 96 oil pickup is 1mm higher, and the 97 tube on the right is lower with an elongated oil sump barrel.

Here you can see on the 97 left the 4 indents the hold the oil pick up tube in the pan are longer than the ones on the 96 right.

Although the 97 pan on the left is taller than the 96 on the right, the bottom configuration is different. Therefore it doesn't use more oil than the 96 stock amount of around 4 qts.
