mine came out easily, and covered in oil.
I didn't bother to wind it up, and as soon as the APE was sync'd, I threw the Automatic away.

Well my project went very smooth thanks to this thread. Now for the adjustment, I slowly tightened the bolt until the rattling stopped, gave it a half turn and tightened the locknut down. I know I should probably check the cam chain for proper adjustment, but is this really needed? I don't see how a half turn past rattling can be too much tension... right?

Ok guys this might be a stupid question but do you have put the engine at tdc when you do this?

you can do it at anytime, just make sure the bike is off... lots of oil in there.

When do these cam tensioners usually start giving out? I think my tensioner is still good cause i dont hear any rattling yet. Justa purr but she still only has 16000 miles on her as a 95

i just orderd and ape unit, then i got an email saying they were out of stock, si they custom made me one and shipped it! good customer service right there !

My bike needs one of these bad!!! Most of the rattling goes away when it is completely warmed up but it sounds bad when it's cold.

Nice write up!!

Mine is in the mail, after 45k one previous owner original miles it's time for a replacement.
