Wheelie question?
and so the trick to stop that happening is to drop the front wheel down straight and pul back hard on the bars to dampen any shake before it becomes a full blown slapper?
That's the sort of movie that keeps my front wheel on the ground...

yes put the wheel down straight....i would advise holding the bars straight as opposed to pulling on them---many times you won't pull back evenly

--oh yeah, and if it starts slappin-GIVE IT GAS!!!!! lol

Can't speak from personal experience, however, that is what i have been told works by many people who have had it happen to them. The science behind it seems logical. The reason that a tankslapper occurs is that the gyroscopic balance in the front tire has been upset...therefore, adding power would help to stabilze the bike and settle it....rolling off the throttle may actually make the tank slapper worse.
Anyone else know of anything else?

Guys, this happened to me once, but i luckly didn't go down. It has nothing to do with wheelies, it's all about sudden change in traction of the rear tyre. What happened with me is that I was going about 80 on 3rd gear and lowered to 1st and released the clutch (dunno why i did it on purpose!) anyways, the rear type lost traction and started flippin', I just pulled back the clutch and held my self together. I was so freakin' scared! The best thing to do is hold the clutch and raise your butt slightly off the seat so it won't rattle you up... You see it happen in GP races, it's because dropping the gears suddenly and losing traction.

i know what you're talking about, thats caused by a rough downshift, which you pretty much know, lol its happened to me a few times while i was learning. thats not what they are talking about though. what was being discussed was what happens if you raise the front wheel off the ground, and take it out of alignment with the rear wheel, when it contacts the ground again, it will violently snap back in line with the rear, and if it was far enough out of alignment it will actually throw the wheel so hard that it kicks all the way to the opposite direction, back and forth. it happened to me not long ago, i hit a bump in the road, and the wheel came up slightly, i was still being thrown around from the bump, so when i came down, not only did i bust my ***** on the tank, the handlebars were crossed. felt like i was riding a rodeo bull, lol. its an ugly experience and it will scare the **** out of you, just like when your back tire broke loose, lol.
i saw that happend to some guy on a older gsxr 750 in front of his buddy's last week......i felt no sympathy due to the retardness of him riding my *** when i was already doing 50 in a 45 in my truck...
