I agree that, that is technically a backhoe (although in NZ we would refer to it as a JCB - which just means "a tractor with a whole lot of sh1te hung off it") but what do you perceive to be an excavator?

I'm thinking that you're talking about a tracked machine with a cab that rotates on the chassis?

What we refer to as a "20 ton digger".
