he clearly was trying to get a little air off what looked to be a little rise in the ground - that's exactly how I would have worked it on one of my bikes.
the problem is he got crossed up coming off the lip, and that the tires and suspension were no where near up to the task of absorbing the resulting compression, and the skill level of the rider to deal with an in-air change of trajectory probably wasn't that great either. guessing he doesn't do this on a regular basis. Or again.
