Default Gila Cliff Dwellings, New Mexico, reward.

GILA is pronounced HEELA and is an area located in Southwestern New Mexico, U.S.A. This is a very nice ride. Challenging roads (crossing the Continental Divide),beautiful mountainous and forestedscenery, with native hot springs at the end... End of summer and if anyone is gonna be in the hood, go here.
There are two routes in. If starting from the North, East, or South use Highway 25 to get onto 152 West at exit # 63. If you are trailerin' it, Truth or Consequences would be the place to switch up and fuel up. There is a Hotel and a Micky D's here, and nearby Elephant Butte has hotels and lake resort stuff.152 W. is awsome! Most of the cars and trucks that go to the Gilause the other route.
The first 17 Mi. are easy; agradual climb, with only a couple jinks.Sunrise turns landscape pink.At Hillborough you better stretch a bit because it climbs up and through, andover the notorious Black Mountains and twists through forests. After about 50 miles, take Hwy 35 North, at San Lorenzo, towards Mimbres. Here, the road opens up a bit, for 26 mi. and that's where one turns North, at Lake Roberts, onto Hwy 15 N. 15 N dead ends at the Cliff Dwellings after about 20 mi. and passes several natural hot spings. Get there early and you can locate them by their steam plumes, off in the side canyons.

If you comefrom the West, use Highway 10 to Lordsburg, and then take 90 North, 42 miles,to Silver City. If trailerin' it, thenSilver Cityis a good place to switch up and gas up. There is a Wal Mart. This is a nondescript 42 Mi. but it gets you to the reward, which starts here, North on 15. This route is awsome, but it is slightlyless twisty than the other route and so it is used by the automobilers more. Runningthrough the thick of the mountains and over The Divide, the"Backbones of the North American Continent" are laid bare toHeaven, here andvisible in stark relief. Again, when you get to the Gila Hot Springs, seek out the springs, by plume, by smell, orask a local.
Once you've ridden and soaked, I suggest visiting the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Just park atthe Ranger Station, and it is a short walk (or wheelchair)into a different millenia. It is a trip. Pax, G.
