Default Question...

Not to sure If this is the right section so mods move if needed.

My question is... Whats the difference in Riding boots and Regular shoes? People have been telling me to get Riding Boots But cant give me a valid argument.. They just say.. "because you need them". I currently wear adidas while i ride.. crashed once in them.. they held up great and i didnt have any serious injuries to my feet...

But can someone tell me the real reason to getting Riding Boots? other than "because i need them"

Moved to Riding Gear.

To answer, your Adidas are not designed to handle a crash. Even the riding shoes I wear commuting will provide significantly more protection.

Dainese Quito Leather Shoes

These extend well above the ankle which will provide abrasion protection from the ground in a slide. The material will last longer than your Adidas sliding across the pavement both because the type of leather and the stitching used. There is composite inserts at the ankle and soft inserts throughout the boot to provide impact protection. The chances of these being ripped off my foot in crash are much lower than your Adidas.

Dainese TRQ Race Out Boots
These are designed for aggressive riding, providing significantly more protection than my Quitos. They're designed to prevent twisting of the ankle while you flop around on the ground. The composite armor extends well above the shin, protecting hard impacts in those areas. The heel has protection as well. There's a slider on the toes to prevent the foot catching should the toes come in contact while riding (happens more often than you think). Both boots have soles designed to grip on pavement under various conditions.

Basically your Adidas, even if they're high tops, lack the protection of boots designed for riding because they were never designed with the impacts and sheering forces of a motorcycle crash in mind. They lack the simple protection of something covering the laces to prevent them getting caught on the rearsets and other places. In your previous crash you got lucky, I'd say.

the average riding boot with have:
- reinforced toes and heels
- high ankle support, usually with protective elements
- either no laces, or buckles that prevent the laces from flopping around
- good non-skid soles for dealing with oils in the road

are they necessary? no, but they do have specific features designed with motorcycling in mind.

Wow, I have seen some serious squid vids but that guy is the new king!

The boots also have a pad for the shift pedal so it doesn't wear through the leather.

Regen, that new sig is sweet!

I have the Dainese Quito's as well. I like them a lot.

Will probably pick up a set of more serious race boots for next summer though.

Yeah... No shirt... shorts... no helmet... Looks like no gloves.... And his Theory on opening the gate is to speed up and try to breach it like a navy seal saving hostages!

More-so on the left boot for whatever reason, but it isn't too bad. I'd say they could make another two seasons at the very least.
