I was once forced to ride home at night with a dark tinted visor.

It was hard to see, but everyone is different, I would not recommend it either way.

I have no experience with light tinted ones, for me it's either go dark or go home during the day.

At night I switch to a clear one.

I can use my gold tinted shield any time but I prefer to only wear it on sunny days and pop my clear shield in if I know I'm going to be out on a cloudy day or at night. If I honestly cant see with my tinted shield and I have no other options Ill just flip it up for the ride home and hope I don't get hit by any rocks, falling acorns, birds, or bugs.

I wear a dark one, i'll throw the clear one on if i know i'll be out after dark. I keep a set of clear glasses in my undertail in case i get caught after dark or if i loose a shield or something(never had it happen but hey never know) flip up the dark and put on teh glasses

I have my AC-12 sitting on my desk with a light smoke, and it looks pretty much like the visor in this ad: (can't link to it - the image is freakin huge)

Mine is OK @ dusk, but after that you start having trouble with stuff that isn't in your direct headlight.

+1 on the glasses. All it takes is getting caught after dark once and you're in a bad situation.

I've just changed from a dark visor to a lighter tinted one and it is much better. It still blocks out enough sunlight, but the real benefit is when riding from light to dark quickly - e.g. overhanging trees. With the dark visor, I couldn't see anything as the light changed. With the light tint one it's MUCH better.

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this yet but when I went from a clear shield to a dark smoke it was noticeably cooler inside my helmet. Much better than my clear shield with sunglasses. I'm certainly glad I have it during some of the 105F degree heat index days around here.

get a dark pinlock an be done with it, i have a dark an clear pinlocks and they easily fit under the rear seat or in a backpack and take 2 seconds to change, plus they never fog, well i got my clear one to fog a little once while i was stopped and it was 17 outside with all the vents closed
