Helmet??
I have no experience bc I havent even ridden a bike yet, but i researched mags for the same question and found an answer.. I dont remember exactly what magazine it was but it had a comparison on a few types of helmets ranging from $75 to $600 and to make a long story short they all offered about the same amounts of protection.. I think you mostly pay for brand name and design.. someone correct me if im wrong
All helmets are made to a certain standard. Some companies go that extra mile to make sure that the best materials as used. you also pay for comfort. I mean my Arai cosair lid is light compared to a cheaper version of teh same brand. You know when you do your should checks you head doesnt tilt off your bike. Bit OTT, You need to set your budget go to the shop and see which one you feel comfortable with.
helmet's have 2 stamp's of approvel, "DOT" and "SNELL", DOT alone is your bare bone's approvel that's what's on those little cearel bowl's H.D. rider's think are so cool [:'(] you want one that has BOTH !!! but not one that's too cheap say 50 buck's, remember your head is in this thing and you don't want to find out the hard way, you should have spent the extra cash, go at least 200.00 or more from there it's preference, DON'T GO CHEAP ON SAFTY GEAR !!!!!! IT MIGHT BE THE DIFF OF LIFE AND DEATH !!!!
You pay the big $$ for comfort and peace of mind. I would not trust my noggin to the lowest bidder.
Oh, and don't forget customer service. Just about all helmets nowadays have those cool little vents that love to get busted when you accidentally bump it on something. Can you get replacements? How much? How long will it take?

there was a study done on this before. they compared $80 helmets to Shoei. the main difference between cheap and expensive is:
1. Comfort
2. Ventilation
3. Thickness of insulation
the study showed that the thicker more dense insulation used in expensive helmets is actally worse for you on an impact. since the material is less dense, it has less absorbing power. picture this, try putting a block of styrofoam on your head and hit it with a bat or something blunt, then try the same with a piece of wood or concrete. they use denser materials claiming that it will withstand more than one impact in an accident. so the conclusion, style comfort and ventilation is what you pay $400 extra for.
my helmet is DOT and Snell 2000, THH for $80 off ebay. comfortable at that. ventilation could be better.

From what Understand, Make sure the helmet is DOT and SNELL approved, and from there pick your extras. ventilation is nice, comfort and replaceable and washable inners is nice. Also when you drop a helmet, even from maybe 6 ft, you can damage the integrity of the helmet and create small cracks that will later make you lose some portection when you need the helmet most. With that said, some companies will offer you a option where you can send your helmet in and they will X-Ray it and check for those tiny cracks in the insulation. Thats just another thing that will cause the helmet to be more costly. Just remember, you get what you pay for.
