Been working on all the Fairings and panels to be repaired & painted, I have the Tank and rear seat panel to go.
I used a dremel to V Groove any cracks on both sides and then used Supaglue and baking soda to repair. works really good
The front fairing I had to use some PVC Junction box ABS to make up the missing piece
I have used filler and primed it last night looking good so far
this is the front panel which was the most damaged before priming
I finished painting the silver parts and also painted the pearl white on all the other panels on the weekend
the tank, side panels, and rear section I will rub down in 600 then mask and paint the blue, red, silver then apply the graphics and clear coat again
waiting on a replica graphics kit from Zen graphics in the UK these are basecoat then 2K clear for the silver panels the white panels are all White basecoat, pearl basecoat then 2K clear - I will rub and basecoat red, blue and silver on the tank, side panels and rear seat panel then reclear with the graphics as well
I have painted the wheels already, slowly getting there
Sanded these parts that I cleared, then painted the silver, masked painted the red then clear coated again
The tank and top fairing will be sanded again, graphics then over coated in clear to seal it all in
I hadn't hard about superglue and baking soda trick before. Is it sandable or did you have to skim with filler/putty afterwards? I'm always interested in a cheaper option for bonding cracked abs. 2-part polyurethane is great but at $50/tube it gets pricey
yes you can sand it ( the supaglue and baking soda ) it can be a pit pitted so I skimmed with filler as well then primer.
I masked and painted the blue on the front, small side covers and tank. Then applied the graphics, then clearcoated. All the parts where sanded with 600 before applying the base blue and graphics
These are the last 5 items I had to paint before I can start reassembly so its a good feeling. Just waiting on some factory parts from Honda to finish off.
Mainly the tank mountings and tank prop rod, tank heat shield, all the fairing bolts. blue basecoat applied before clearcoat clearcoated
almost back together, just waiting on Air filter, Fuel tank insulator pad, Tank support rod and a few smaller things from parts shop
and ready to test ride. I'm calling it the COVID CBR
I swapped this bike for a go kart with the owner 1st July this year Just before Melbourne went into 2nd wave lockdown
I hoping by 1st October it will be ready to ride
So nice to see a project come (near to?) completion like that. I still have my 1990 which has the exact same look you are going for. Yours looks insanely good!
