I'm in SoCal. When I first got my bike, I didnt split lanes. I was just unsure about the legality of it. But everyone here does it. You feel weird when someone passes you splitting lanes and your a$$ is sitting way back in the line. So now I split lanes all the way to the front at a red light. And when traffic is stopped on the 55,57, 60, 405 etc fwy, im splittin. When your splitting lanes, people move out of the way for you. Its pretty cool. When someone moves, I try and always give them a thumbs or wave orsomething up letting them know I appreciate it. I always move out of the way when I'm in my cage.
Like someone said earlier, there are risks and advantages of riding a bike. Splitting traffic is definately one of the bonuses riding here in SoCal. The traffic blows.

yeah i usually pass on the left (they just move over for me) so i will keep my hand on the throttle but put out a peace sign still on the throttle - usually people look at the other vehicle they "let" pass them, so i know they can see it. i try not to look like a d*ck, but your never going to please everyone - so oh well

here in nc they dont take to that to well
pisses people off
you almost always get somebody blowing a horn at ya or flipping ya off

Up here in VA everyone thinks they are the traffic patrol vigilantesand will cut you off if you try it or swerve at you/block the lanesbecause you are getting ahead of them, besides getting flipped off and blasted with the horn.
half the people in VA dont know how to drive in the 1st place.

Last Friday on I-5 in Sacramento there was a big traffic jam. Dead stop as far as the eye could see. I started splitting through when I came upon 3 cage CHP officers. This is the first time I split past any police officers. I was nervous , but as I approached all three CHP cars moved over in their lanes to let me by easier. Two of the three gave me a wave as I passed by. Splitting lanes that day saved me an hour or so.

I split lanes at every single red light, even if it's only a couple cars. It's legal, I do it, get over it. If you think it's a d-bag move then too freakin bad.

California rocks.
Whatever
