Windows 7
Anyone else try the beta of windows 7 yet?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../dd353205.aspx
I'm running it right now in vmware, because quite frankly, I don't trust it. So far it isn't bad, but I don't really see any huge reasons why it's different from vista. They modified the start bar so that Internet Explorer 8 as well as Windows Explorer act more like Safari does on Macs such that you have to click on the icon again to find the window, and they are much more foreceful with using multiple tabs rather than multiple windows, but it isn't blocked. The biggest improvement is MSpaint. Anyone have anything interesting they've tried with it or things they'd like to see?

RE: Windows 7
I am still running XP...
probably still will for a while since most of what I do with my comp is play games and browse the net. both of which XP seems perfectly suited for (perhaps even better for games cause I heard that vista is kinda buggy with some games)
I am not going to shi+ all over vista like a lot of people have done, my mom has it on her comp and the thing i did do with it like set up her internet router were very easy, the "fix the internet" tool in XP which 97% doesn't do anything is a little better, it still doesn't fix most problems but it atleast tells you where the problem is, un like XP that just says its fix when it definatly is not.

RE: Windows 7
I tried to dl it, but it wouldnt start the dl. I got a beta key and am waiting for my brother to hook me up with the ISO, however, everything I have heard so far is great. I want to see what the benchmarks are like, but the EULA for W7 specifically say no benchmarking in a beta. Makes sense, but I still want to know.
I have been using Vista for over 2 years now, so I am completely willing to give W7 a shot. Vista was never a bad OS, just got a bad rep from the get go.
Most of the changes in Windows 7 are not so much visual, but more in the backend. They worked to free up some resources for minimized windows, increase battery life for laptops (w/builtin power mgmt tools), some UAC changes, and plenty more.

By the way, if you were having issues starting the download, I was having the same issue. Were you trying to download it through Firefox? That's why mine didn't work the first time. Once I tried in IE, it worked. As a side note, I was given a different activation key the second time in IE, so make sure you get the right one.

Mate ...I would not try it out because I am old and still getting over the shock of not using good old Win98.. ( my fav because you could fix it in 5 minutes when it broke )
I use XP Pro now and I think I might stay with it

haha, I was unfortunate enough to miss windows 98. I jumped straight from 95 to windows ME (Worst OS in existance, ever!) I'd hang onto XP pro as long as you can. I bet it'll still be a relevant OS for at least 3 more years

i did the oppisite of you, went from 98 to XP, (I was LONG over due for a switch by the time i did)
I will probably stick with XP till windows 7 or what ever becomes standard, another upgrade that i am holding off on is going to 64bit. I heard there are to many compatibility headaches to work around with drivers and programs that can't run in 64bit and I really dont think i have the knowledge or the paticence to deal with them every time i want to do something.

RE: Windows 7
i put windows 7 on my dell that is 5 years old and it runs great. I like it a lot better than I did vista, but mainly because vista was very user unfriendly imho. The statement about having to click on a window to find it is not true, you can still have everything along the whole taskbar like before, and you can do both alt+tab and windows+tab to change between the open applications. I cant wait for the final copy of the os to come out. I am ready to step up and buy my first new operating system in 6 years! Long live XP I love it to death and will always have it on one of my pcs....

RE: Windows 7
I've had windows 95, 98, ME, XP and now Vista, no reason really, I just get what ever OS they give me when I buy a computer every few years. Honestly I HATE vista, I really want to get XP on this comp and I'm thinking of going to go buy it at this point, its glitchy even with the updates and constantly needs to be authorized to do anything
